If we are more than a fistful of money, what is our sum total?
Money for many of us is the real decision-maker in life.
Everything we do, think, decide, plan for, is based on money. The incessant barrage on our money by all forms of media urges us to spend, buy, and consume. So much so that other parts of us may have withered?
A few weeks ago I watched a TV interview with a young Dutch historian, Rutger Bregman about his just-published book: De geschiedenis van de Vooruitgang. (The history of Progress). T
Through his research he argues that we have an unstoppable urge to grow, explore, and expand and historically we have thrown that energy in The Economy, both macro and micro.
But now the face of that Economy is
changing.
The explosive growth we have experienced in the last 40-60 years is very unlikely to repeat itself in those same proportions. We are happy if growth merely teeters. According to Bregman, there is enough ‘stability’ in the economy to secure a basic level of comfort and safety, but if we want to experience growth, we should look elsewhere.
I was ecstatic! Such a young guy and such clear logic!!!
If economic growth slows, what happens
to our deeply human need to expand?
Can finally talk
about something other than markets and mortgages?
Is it time that we redirect our growth instinct?
-How much do we invest in personal and spiritual growth, let’s say on a monthly basis?
-Do we put stock in our community?
-Is all our wisdom invested and working for us?
I love to talk financial lingo in the
personal growth arena:
-What return of investment do you expect
from yourself this year?
-Have you made five, ten, or twenty-year
forecast on the performance of you?
-Is your personal growth diversified?
-How is your spiritual growth portfolio
performing?
-What is the appreciation of you on a yearly basis?
My big question is: if we are more than a
fistful of money, how do we quantify our true sum total?
Economic growth may stabilize, but what
about our human growth?
Interesting times indeed!!
